Super Scientist!

Kallai won at his School Science Fair!

They didn't give out 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., so I don't know exactly where he placed, but Kallai was picked to advanced to the District Science Fair! There were 100 fifth and sixth grade students competing, and only 10 projects were picked to move on.

In his project Kallai tested different fabrics to see which one insulated the best, and thus would be the best to wear outside in the snow. He wrapped canning jars in "coats" of fabric, then filled them with boiling water and measured the water temperature every 30 minutes for 2 hours. He figured out the density of the fabrics, and the cost of each little coat, and compared the results.

He also did the experiment again after getting the fabrics wet to see if the result was different. He found that Polyester Polar Fleece (when dry) insulated the best, was the least dense, and the cheapest. He also found that none of the fabrics did well when wet, and that the naked jar stayed the warmest! He put a lot of effort into it, and we are very proud of him!

Taliah also did a science project. Since she is in third grade, she was not in the running for advancement to district, but she was one of only 5 or 6 in her class to do a project. She worked with her friend Alex and they tested to see if they could make a reduced fat cookie that still tasted good.
They made 4 batches of cookies using different fat sources, butter, margarine, light margarine and mashed bananas. They had a lot of fun taking their cookies to David's office and having all of the employees there do a blind taste test. They found that people preferred margarine! (I was surprised, I thought butter would do the best.) They found that the low fat cookies were really unpopular.

Way to go Kallai and Taliah. You are SUPER SCIENTISTS!

Wow, those are some pretty cool projects! Congrats to the kids, that's way awesome. A girl I know that is obsessed with low fat adds apple sauce to anything that calls for butter (instead of the butter). You should try it and tell me what you think!

Way to go Kallai and Taliah! I remember talking about that a while ago on on of our runs and I was excited to read about the results. Very interesting. Oh, and I'm not surprised that no one liked the "healthy" cookies. Treats are just better when they're loaded with sugar and fat.
