A stroll down memory lane

David went to a Golf Expo this morning with some buddies. As he was walking around he saw a game for sale that he recognized. It was a game his Dad bought when he was a kid. He and his siblings played it constantly. Of course he had to buy one, well two, actually. It's Arnlod Palmer Golf, and it's a blast! There is a lover on the handle that you use to make Arnie swing the golf club. There are differend clubs, so you have to choose the appropriate one. The best part is when you get too close tot he furniture and have to crawl over it to try to get to where you can swing from. David drove his ball into the potted plant. He had to take a drop on that one! I am looking forward to hours of family fun playing this game.

Book Report

I just thought I'd share Kallai's very cool Book Report Mobile. I think it turned out great! It's made out of a tree branch, leather and paper. We had a blast making it.

25 Random Things

25 random things about me, Tammy, just in case you ever wanted to know.

1.Growing up, my mom always used to say, “You should spend the most time and energy on your family relationships, because friends will come and go, but your family will be with you forever.” I have come to agree, and my closest friends are also family members.

2.I usually try to dress up a little. If I am wearing jeans and a t-shirt, I feel sloppy. When I feel sloppy, I invariably run into someone I want to impress, and then I am embarrassed.

3.I love to read. I get so caught up in the books I read, that I feel I am in them. My family often can’t get my attention because although my body is in the room with them, my mind is far away.

4.I have become quite daring recently. When I have an opportunity to do something new, I ask myself, “Why not?” If I can’t think of a good enough reason, I go for it. “Too scary, hard, or embarrassing” are not good enough reasons. I have done some fun and interesting things (some more interesting than fun) such as eating bugs, learning to ride a motorcycle, scuba diving, running half marathons, etc.

5.I have lived in Utah County my whole life.

6.Growing up I hated many foods, especially vegetables. The only veggies I liked were raw carrots, frozen peas, and canned green beans. As an adult, I decided that I wanted my kids to eat veggies, and I knew they wouldn’t if I didn’t fix them, AND eat them. So I fixed all the veggies that I hated and ate a big helping of them at dinner every day, never letting on that I couldn’t stand them. Surprise, surprise, I have learned to like most of them, or figured out ways to fix them that taste good! (Salt makes everything taste better, even fruit!)

7.I have a terrible memory. It drives my family crazy, but I think it might be a good thing. If someone does something that makes me mad, I usually can’t remember what it was, so I seldom stay mad for very long.

8.David is my best friend, and not just because you are supposed to be best friends with your spouse. He is my best pal. I would rather hang out with him than anyone else, even my girl friends. We have so much fun together. I can’t wait to spend the rest of forever with him.

9.I love sushi! My favorite restaurant is Yapona in American Fork.

10.I like to be in charge. I have great ideas for how things should run, and how to make them run better. I don’t mind not being in charge as long as the person in charge leads intelligently, but I really get frustrated with poor leadership.

11.I love to exercise. I love how it makes me feel. I love how it makes me look. I am especially partial to running, cycling and weight lifting. I avoid team sports… too many bad memories from an awkward childhood.

12.I am addicted to sugar. If it’s in the house, watch out, because soon it will be in my mouth! David hides the candy, but I always find it.

13.I grew up with parents who could do just about anything. They were willing to tackle just about any project, (rebuilding engines, reupholstering couches, tying fishing flies, building cabinets, fixing appliances) and were usually able to complete it as well or better than a professional. I came out of that home with the attitude that I can do anything, or if I can’t, I can learn how. I have had a few spectacular disasters, but some spectacular successes as well.

14.I hate laundry! I think it breeds at night when I am asleep.

15.I firmly believe that parents should be heroes in their own home, to their own children rather than trying to do something spectacular for worldly recognition. I realize that we need soldiers, police officers and fire fighters, and I honor them for their selfless service. I have absolutely no respect, however, for men and women who blast into outer space, climb Everest, trek across the Antarctic, or even become highly successful, but never home business people, when they have young children just wishing that mommy or daddy would come home.

16.I am very clumsy. I put tile in my kitchen because I was tired of ruining my floor by dropping things on it all the time.

17.I am very competitive. Usually I am quietly competitive, never letting others know I am competing against them, or whether I feel I won or not. But sometimes my competitive nature comes out into the open and I shock people. I have to rein myself in on my children’s school projects, because if I don’t, my project… oh, wait… their project will be the most elaborate in the class. :o)

18.I raid my 18 yr. old daughter’s closet several times a week. She has much cuter clothes than I do.

19.I am a big believer in positive thinking. In others, I try to focus on their positive qualities, and give them the benefit of the doubt about their negative ones. (Maybe I just caught them on a bad day. Maybe I don’t see the whole picture.) In myself, I try to cheer myself on when I do well, and when I don’t? Oh well, we can’t be good at everything, can we?

20.I named my car “Beau” because he is my secret love.

21.I love to sew. I used to make “store bought” jeans for my daughter when we didn’t have money for school clothes. No one could ever tell.

22.I used to be very, very shy. Then as I got older, I realized that I really liked myself. If other people don’t like me, I don’t really care! No more shyness.

23.I don’t watch scary movies. My imagination is vivid enough to come up with nightmares on it’s own. There’s no need to add more fuel to the fire. The last scary movie I watched was a really lame one where the tooth fairy would kill you if you woke up while she was taking your tooth. Even though it was lame, and I was mocking it the whole time, before I could finally fall asleep that night I had to bring the entire family into bed with me. David regretted talking me into watching that one!

24.I do French manicures on my own toes, with little yellow daisies.

25.I am currently in training for my first triathlon. I've got the running and cycling down. The swimming is coming along slowly.

Blast from the Past!

A quarter century ago a blonde, blue eyed girl moved in 4 houses up the street from me. I had seen her around school a bit, but we weren't friends. Far from it. She thought I was a teacher's pet brown noser. I thought she was stuck up. Living so close together gave us a better perspective. Soon we were attached at the hip. We had sleepovers and watched chick flicks and music videos all night, jumped on the trampoline together, obsessed about boys, gossiped about back-stabbing girls, all of the things young teen girls will do. We were great friends. All too soon she moved away. We kept in touch for a while. I even flew to visit her for a week the next summer, but eventually we lost touch.

Just last week, I got a friend request on facebook. I couldn't believe my eyes. My long lost friend had found me! Even better, I learned that she has lived less than 15 minutes away from me for the last 7 years. I went and had lunch with her today. I was a little nervous, because I'm not that great at chit chatting. I wondered if there would be lots of awkward silences. I even told Mariasha where I was going, and who I would be with. I told her it was "In case she ends up being a crazy person and she murders me or something." My fears were totally unfounded. We had so much fun together! We haven't seen each other in over twenty years, but it felt like we had been friends forever.

I officially love Facebook! If not for Facebook, we probably would have continued living near each other without knowing it for years. Obviously, with any program like this, you need to be cautious, but I really think it is great! If for no other reason, because it got me back in touch with Julia!
