Sweetheart Dance

Mariasha attended the Sweetheart Dance with Austin Davis. They also went to dinner at the Harvest Restaurant at Thanksgiving Point.

Goodbye to a Old Friend

David's about to say goodbye... to his car. He has been driving the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse for about 2 years. He fell in love with the car right away, but the romance has turned sour. Not enough power or luxury he says. So it's time to say goodbye.

Super Scientist!

Kallai won at his School Science Fair!

They didn't give out 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., so I don't know exactly where he placed, but Kallai was picked to advanced to the District Science Fair! There were 100 fifth and sixth grade students competing, and only 10 projects were picked to move on.

In his project Kallai tested different fabrics to see which one insulated the best, and thus would be the best to wear outside in the snow. He wrapped canning jars in "coats" of fabric, then filled them with boiling water and measured the water temperature every 30 minutes for 2 hours. He figured out the density of the fabrics, and the cost of each little coat, and compared the results.

He also did the experiment again after getting the fabrics wet to see if the result was different. He found that Polyester Polar Fleece (when dry) insulated the best, was the least dense, and the cheapest. He also found that none of the fabrics did well when wet, and that the naked jar stayed the warmest! He put a lot of effort into it, and we are very proud of him!

Taliah also did a science project. Since she is in third grade, she was not in the running for advancement to district, but she was one of only 5 or 6 in her class to do a project. She worked with her friend Alex and they tested to see if they could make a reduced fat cookie that still tasted good.
They made 4 batches of cookies using different fat sources, butter, margarine, light margarine and mashed bananas. They had a lot of fun taking their cookies to David's office and having all of the employees there do a blind taste test. They found that people preferred margarine! (I was surprised, I thought butter would do the best.) They found that the low fat cookies were really unpopular.

Way to go Kallai and Taliah. You are SUPER SCIENTISTS!

Swim Bike Run

I have been thinking about doing a triathlon for a while now. I run and cycle, and I figured why not throw swimming in and do all three. I hesitated a little because I am a really, really poor swimmer. I didn't want to be embarrassed by slowing down the racer swimming in the lane behind me. (My first triathlon swim would have to be in a pool, not open water.)

But I have finally decided to dive in. I found out about a beginner triathlon in April that has a very short swim (200 yds). There is a kids Triathlon at the same race, so the whole family has decided to join me (except Mariasha, she is "allergic" to exercise).

David, Jordan and I will do the Beginner Triathlon, and Kallai and Taliah will do the Kids Triathlon. We started training yesterday. We went to the local fitness center to run and swim. The kids did much better than I expected! They all ran between 1.5- 2 miles. Taliah swam 2 laps, Kallai and Jordan many more than that. I swam 8 laps, the exact length of the race, with very long rests in between laps, and half of the laps doing the backstroke. Not too impressive. I have a huge amount of improvement needed and only 2 months to do it in. Oh well, maybe they can divert swimmers to other lanes if I slow things down too much on race day. Wish us luck!
